In 2004, Ubergames released the RPG-X modification for Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force, growing to become perhaps the most comprehensive interactive Star Trek roleplaying experience ever released. RPG-X transforms Holomatch from a frantic arena shooter into a sandbox tool set that enables players to share original stories inspired by a franchise spanning over fifty years and countless tales of starship crews exploring the galaxy on television. With permission from CBS and Raven Software, roleplaying community The Last Outpost has made Star Trek: RPG-X available for free as a standalone game. Star Trek: RPG-X has no predetermined missions, campaigns, or goals. Instead, in many ways a digital spin on the classic tabletop roleplaying game format, it is a massive, customizable sandbox that gives you the tools to create, run, and participate in your own Star Trek roleplays in a way not available in any other game.

In general, I agree with Apprentice's assessment of this release. Yes, it is and remains a sandbox experience but an experience that is ten years too late and feels more and more like a glorified repack then an actual release, especially when the competition is beyond killing.

It will certainly not be the next Fortnite, both in size and in popularity (or any other free game) but certain comments here on the ModDB page do give me reason of concern. The lack of content (both in-house and third-party) and information about the development (website, blogposts) is a dead giveaway for visitors to reach the ultimate conclusion that this mod is a dead mod, despite Grizz's claim of "Don't believe everything you read on the internet, for Star Trek: RPG-X is still very much in development". Seeing is believing and right now, no-one sees anything.

My suggestions for this mod are the following:

1) Create a website where people can find information on the mod/product.

2) Post blogs with screenshots, development information, third party development (if still exists), general information about your ideas and future implementations for this mod.

Inform people about what is happening, even if you had to remove that idea because of compatibility of whatever other issues. That way, people will see that something is still going on here with instead of the sound of silence people are finding here.

3) Resolve the issue with Apprentice! Don't make him beg, crawl and squirm followed by a vote that has been rigged from the start so that you could be entertained! There are other ways of doing this and there is a lot that can be said about the actions of TLO members itself (Veritas, Grizz), which are nothing else then purposely designed to kick Apprentice while he was already down on the ground. Grizz may have removed his comments but I have seen them and the system still retains them.

Despite your misgivings about Apprentice, he is still the only Elite Force mapper that is still active and can still produce content for RPG-X. Everyone else and I name Will & Anthony, GSIO01 and other people who previously contributed to RPG-X (such as AdmiralJaneway, Turbomarcin) are all vanished and higly unlikey that they will ever return to create more content, while Apprentice already has content readily available due to his releases for other games (Battlestar Aurelia, his original version of the light Frigate to name a few) and Klaw's maps are nice but are from a level where Apprentice and other mappers were twenty years ago and have gone to other games/engines if they are still active in the modding/mapping scene.

This flawed repack (an NX01 loading screen. Am I playing RPG-X or the NX01 mod?) cannot be released "as is" and hope that it will sell itself. You don't have the next Fortnite or PUBG in your hands. What you have, is something that is at least ten years old where only members of The Last Outpost are interested in. Maybe people that are or were active in other (now defunct) groups may be attracted to it but people who are expecting a Fornite/PUBG experience with new content every other day, will not be interested in this mod and how it has been released.

A flawed repack that never utilizes its potential . . .

After testing the Ultimate Edition, I fail to see what the improvements over the last version truly is. For instance, a number of bugs that plagued the older rpgxEF release are still in there when I try to load the last build of my Animal Extended TWO map. The changes in the code enables me to see my own feet plus a waving tricorder whenever I jump around the place when I play at 1st person perspective. I fail to see the benefits and the necessity of these kind of changes plus I noticed some framerate issues compared to the older versions I used. Eversince I got a GTX480, I never experienced any framerate issues with Elite Force, the RPG-X modification or any other idtech3 engine (except when the map wasn't properly optimised) but for some reason, this release manages to create a visible drop in framerate.

As for the maps included with the Ultimate Edition, a nice collection of previously made maps by various mappers over the game's entire lifespan of 18 years but it ends there. None of the maps have been reworked in order to take advantage of this new engine build or have otherwise been visually updated to take advantage of the current and previous generation of graphics card (such as the GTX900 series and AMD's equivalent), especially from the in-house developed maps such as the Hercules (rpg_frigate) and Normandy (v1). Where are the exclusive releases for this version of RPG-X? If one expect a higher look and feel for the maps similar to what happened with DE_Dust2 for the releases of the various Counter-Strike games over the years, you will not find it in this release.

Then the question remains, for who is it? Simple answer since it comes from TLO, it's for TLO and its members. Will other RPG-X groups benefit from this release? Yes and no. Yes since it contains a large collection of maps that have been frequently used for RPG-X over the years and its convenient if you don't want to spent hours searching for the right maps. No, since other groups will have to get rid of the TLO ranksets, musicpacks, modelpacks and what-not server/client-side in order to give this release their flavor and remove potential inconsistencies and other mumbo-jumbo that could cause their server to crash because of some forgotten TLO-specific file(s).

Pity, since it could've been so much more! Unfortunately, it will not exceed the notion of a repack, similarly to the re-releases as EA has done so in the past and is still doing of certain older games as a "classic title" or something . . .

It delivers a great sandbox to RP on. The collection of maps, model and music packs make this a great Ultimate Edition.
