Return to the Roots or RttR is an open source add-on type of remake of The Settlers II. This means it requires the original game files in order to work as Ubisoft did not give Settlers Freaks (the group developing RttR) a permission to redistribute the files. This means you need The Settlers II: Gold Edition for RttR to work.

Do you still remember the good old Settlers 2? Then this "Mod" (it is actually a complete rewrite of Settlers 2, only using the graphic-files of said game) is the right thing for you.
It basically lifts Settlers 2 to a modern level (i.e. HD/4k resolutions, support for modern operating systems (Windows, Linux, OS X), faster gameplay, dozens of additional addons like converting mineable resources into something else, new buildings like the charburner, much more maps than you'll see in any recent RTS, and even a complete new faction: The Babylonians).
However, one of the most important features it offers in my opinion is the ability to play online with up to 8 other players. Even more is possible.
You should also keep an eye on it, as it is still in development and new stuff is added to the game from time to time.
There are a few minor bugs like games going async, some lagging issues if someone doesn't have the best internet connection, etc. But compared to a lot of commercial early access titles released nowadays it still runs pretty well.
I really recommend you try this out, if you like building strategy games. Even if you never played the old Settlers 2, which is still available on some digital distribution platforms.
Fantastic enhancements to a game that still rocks today it's timeless.

This is not just a mod, it's a full remake of the game! The feel is amazingly close to the original with very few issues which have probably been fixed already in the nightly build (I've only played the stable release so far). The game has lots of smaller mods/addons that can be activated (like infinite fish/mines etc) which can seriously enhance the gameplay. Very good work!
