Gilbert Bates' Unofficial Patch for the Return to Helgen Mod
Gilbert Bates Unofficial Patch for Return to Helgen
Gilbert Bates' Unofficial Patch for Return to Helgen.
This mod is an unofficial patch to Nanobyteghost's Return to Helgen mod for Skyrim Special Edition (available here: Moddb.com). I take no credit for the original mod, this patch is merely a labor of love that tweaks a few things and fixes several issues I encountered while playing.
This patch is a separate ESP that requires the original Return to Helgen mod to function. Due to a variety of reasons, I have chosen not to post this on nexus; In the unlikely event I see this reposted there, I will be forced to report it. I maintain sole responsibility of support for this patch; If you are playing Return to Helgen with this patch installed, please to not bother anyone involved with the original Return to Helgen mod with support related questions.
Installation instructions (PLEASE READ):
1. Install the original Return to Helgen mod (provided in the link above)
2. Rename "Teg_ReturnToHelgen_Textures.bsa" to "Teg_ReturnToHelgen - Textures.bsa". This will prevent a CTD in Solitude and other areas.
3. Install this patch and make sure it's esp is load after the original mod
Here are the changes that this patch makes to the original Return to Helgen mod:
1. Start of the mod has been changed significantly to increase compatibility and immersion (see below).
2. Dialog has been rewritten to a style closer to Skyrim's vanilla dialog, as opposed to the Morrowind style dialog of the original mod.
3. Helgen Mine chest now uses the vanilla respawn system, as opposed to the buggy timer script in the original mod.
4. Fixed an issue where the first Penitus Oculatus quest didn't actually give players the proper gold reward.
5. Removed several instances of floating grass in Helgen.
6. All items in Helgen are now owned by the townsfolk and all Helgen residents belong to the Falkreath crime faction. All Helgen houses are now locked, and Helgen guards (both Imperial and Stormcloak) now function as Falkreath guards.
7. All important quest npcs have been made essential (as opposed to invulnerable or respawning) to match vanilla behavior.
8. All named NPCs (aside from those meant to be killed), Knights of the Nine, Helgen Patrol men, and Dragon Guards, have been made essential.
9. All targets in assassination quests, as well as several other mod-added npcs, have been added to relevant crime factions. This should make assassination quests a lot harder, but still perfectly doable for stealthy characters.
10. Behavior of the Thalmor NPCs has been modified so they should be more likely to defend each other if attacked.
11. Patrol quests were removed, since they weren't working as intended and could just be cheesed using fast travel to make a ton of gold quickly. The new start for the mod no longer requires them.
12. Option to take equipment from Dragon Guards and Helgen Patrol men was removed, to prevent players from using it to farm infinite equipment.
13. If players return to Helgen after completing "Brave Brave Sir Robin" but before completing "Innocence Lost", they will receive a vision from Talos that gives them an immersive reason to pursue the Dark Brotherhood questline.
How to start the mod:
The start for the mod has been changed significantly by this patch. In order to start the Return to Helgen quests, you must first travel to Solitude after the Civil War has been won. Then, after traveling to a new area, the courier will eventually find you and give you Transfer Orders from either Tullius or Ulfric (depending on your faction). You can then talk to the Commander's Assistant in Helgen with the Transfer Orders in your inventory to be made governor. Everything else should function as it did in the original mod.
Important notes (PLEASE READ):
1. As mentioned above, you must rename "Teg_ReturnToHelgen_Textures.bsa" or you will get constant crashes. This is incredibly important!
2. There are four stages of the Return to Helgen main questline. The first stage is only available if you fought for the Empire in the Civil War. The second stage (Penitus Oculatus quests) requires the completion of the first stage was well as "The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller". The third stage "(Becoming Emperor) requires the completion of the second stage as well as the Dark Brotherhood questline (destroying the DB doesn't count. The fourth stage (The Thalmor war) requires the completion of the third stage as well as "Diplomatic Immunity".
3. When all else fails, go back to the Helgen Town Square and then enter the commander's quarters. If the quest prequesites are met, then you should have dialog with either the Commander's Assistant or another NPC telling you where to go next.
4. Do not clean the original Return to Helgen mod under any circumstances. The mod was not made to be cleaned and will break.
