Also, are pikemen and musketeers separate regiments? I thought they formed up in a way that every other row of men held pikes, and the rest held muskets.
Yes, they are separated (im talking about commander battle). It would be difficult to command both pike and shot at the same time. Also players will have to learn to cooperate. If there are enough players, it would be ideal to have two shots and one pike per "company". So you would have one player using pikemen and the other two using musketeers
I dont know if I understood your question right ^-^
But all you will have to do is basically just spam F4 F7 (if I remember correctly) and then form five rows.
Considering it would be really hard to create a formation and preserve it, the best option would be to follow the nearest pikemen, in case you have musketeers, for example.
Here is an article I did discussing tactics: Steamcommunity.com
Basically, the pikemen would be massed in the centre with a block of musketeers on the left and right flanks.
Looks very nice.

So what spacing would each commander need to allow in order for pike-men and musketeers to merge together easily rather than create a large cluster?

That was so damn cool
Although this might seem cool, won't it be annoying to have the drummers always lagging behind?
You will have to advance slowly. I know it sounds boring but thats how it worked back then.
