Operation Remembrance is a massive expansion and realism mod for EA's Battlefield: Vietnam. Operation Remembrance has been created by Denal Douglas, a private mod-maker, and has been in the works for almost nine years. It adds dozens of maps, small arms, weapons emplacements, aircraft, land vehicles, and naval vessels, as well as significant improvements to the AI, making singleplayer more fun and more challenging.

Is it possible to disable the gloss only in .ini file edits? That way the graphics setting could be left alone.

I don't think so. I think the only way to remove the gloss without touching the graphics setting is to remove the line of code that creates it, but that would have to be done for every weapon and vehicle model that has that line. That's dozens if not hundreds of models. I might do that for the mod at some point, but it means someone with the vanilla game wouldn't be able to play online unless it was with other people who had that patch. And even if I did make a patch like that for the vanilla game, I don't see it being popular.

What is the line that causes the effect?

I forget the exact wording, but in the .RS files, it's one line for weapons, "GlossInAlphaDiffuse True", and for vehicles it's one to three lines depending on the model. One is "WorldSpaceNormal", the other is either "WorldSpaceDiffuse" or "NormalSpaceDiffuse" or something like that, and the last line is "NormalMap" which also always names a texture file. And I actually did spend two days going through the mod's .RS files and removing the glow from all of them, so it's definitely doable.

Does editing the texture file impact the gloss? Maybe you could make it a flat color and copy and paste it for the impacted models instead of needing to do code edits. Though if you already did the edits for the next version that won't be needed anyway.

No, there's no way to affect the gloss by changing the texture file. All of the textures are a matte color already. Even if I tried to edit them and make them darker to counter the gloss, for one thing it's impossible to know exactly how to edit them to counter the gloss perfectly, and for another I think the way the engine works means it would just be a gloss effect on a darker texture, which would show up even worse than the vanilla setting.

I'll try to remember to do that this weekend. In the meantime, here's a link to the mod tools: Moddb.com
