Operation Magistral is based on a major offensive operation conducted by the soviet troops during the soviet-afghan war, it was the last Soviet offensive before the withdrawal. The purpose of the operation was to open the Gardez-Khost highway. In fall of 1987, the Mujahideen had established a series of blockades that severely limited the supply of weapons, ammunition, and food to Soviet forces in the Khost district. In response, the Soviets launched 'Operation Magistral' (Main Highway). Airmobile troops would scout the route the convoy was taking out, and then identify possible ambush locations, and then land small detachments that could take control of any commanding heights prior to the convoy passing. Once it had passed, they would be lifted off, and carried to the next point in a leapfrogging manner.
