Report RSS Outcome of Test Tube #3 - Abstraction

The results are in for our third Test Tube challenge, which we ran over the last week or so.

Welcome back to Map Labs! In late April we ran another competition, Abstraction, asking people to make abstract maps. This turned out to be our most-entered competition to date, so we're insanely proud of it.

On April 25th we started Abstraction, which ran for 3 days and ended on the 28th. This competition turned out to be the most popular one to date, with more (qualified) entries than any competition in the past. It saw 14 main entries and 2 bonus entries.

In third place, we have two entries! Yes, ties can happen. These entries are "Dride" by Gvarados and "Stratosphere Fight" by Steven Cabbage. Dride sees players crawling through an odd sewer system with sickly green fog as they slaughter heaps of antlions and zombies. Stratosphere Fight, on the other hand, has players running around floating island while fighting off Combine forces - including an extra stubborn gunship.

Stratosphere Fight

In second place is "Shake" by Skorly. With clear influence from the boomer shooters of yesteryear like Quake and Doom, this map has players running through maze-like corridors fighting off metrocops and energy ball-wielding combine elites while collecting colored keys.

The first place winner for Abstraction is "Time Destroys Everything" by Matt71490 AKA Event Horizon. A funny and sad retrospective of Half-Life, Time Destroys Everything has players run through some deteriorating environments they may remember while picking up at least one crowbar (there are a few in case you miss it, don't worry).

The full score sheet for Abstration:

We're very proud of this competition, with the sheer number of entries we received. If you'd like to join a future competition, be sure to join our Discord server and follow us on Twitter. Thanks for reading, we hope to see you in the future.

Me and fa'er are awfully sad how the scene and community has deteriorated the last 2 years. Who would of thought 2016 would be the year Source layeth on tis deathbed? Pater did nei.

Alas for name in soul, brethren, there shall be more creativity, expantion and we shall do it via a new era. Amen
