Report article RSS Feed To Source or not to Source, that is the question

HypernovA is moving incredibly slowly - this is mainly due to the fact no one is helping, but also because GoldSrc is a pain in the ass. Should I move to Source? Would you guys mind?

To Source or not to Source, that is the question

Gentlemen, I think we can all agree that HypernovA is almost dead. Not completely, but almost. I can't work much more - I don't have any animators, coders, modellers, and I have one elite mapper and one newbie mapper, as well as two music makers. I can't work like this, unfortunately. If you want HypernovA out sooner (like, a lot sooner), as well as a lot better, tell me. This is incredibly urgent. I know it's sort of disappointing - I wanted to make this amazing GoldSrc mod. It was a fantasy. GoldSrc can't handle what I want to create.

So? Do you want it on Source? Yes or no? As it is, I desperately want to kill this mod - only continuing it because of the promise I made to you ladies and gentlemen.

On the other side, I HAVE been working. Windows 7 has killed most of my coding capabilities, but I've been doing some modelling, as of late. Check out this headcrab. it's ultra HD, so I'll have to cut down the polys by a lot. It's not even final. I've been practicing coding and modelling, and drew a few concepts.

Source is so much nicer to work with - you'll get all your enthusiasm back really quickly if you switch :)
Best of luck.

personaly i wouldn't even doubt to move to source because it is looking so much better, you have so many more option and tools to work with that it only will make your mod better!

so, just move to source, and you will never regret the change!!
i have been working for nearly 7 years now with source and it is very user friendly and stable engine and editor.

but it will take quit some work to make the change, a lot of assets will need to be made from scratch or renewed what will take quit some effort and time, still, just change....
that is my answer to your question, i will track this project to see what you decide to do.

much success,

don't know what is happening here, but mine and the other comments can hardly be seen. maybe you have a setting wrong?

please do check, otherwise people maybe don't want to comment, because it can't be read by others anyway.

success again!!

Well, thanks, gentlemen! I'm practicing Source stuff right now. Unfortunately, I can't find many Source programming tutorials, so it'll be a tough change. Thanks for the enthusiasm, everyone!

Don't Go to SOURCE is less viable than Gold Source, And what you've done to the Gold Source Engine is AMAZING.

If you are not so sure do some Source Things and if you don't like it stay with GoldSRC

If it's source and you wanna see what some basic good source mods feel like you should probably check Nightmare house 2 and Smod. Both mods are good and they can teach ya allot of what you can do, ofcourse smod is more about improvements but still. Anywho, prolly source could do better because with goldsource comes the fact that most people aren't that crazy to edit the engine and such...

Am I the only person in this world who thinks that Nightmare House 2, was not in fact good, but kind of ****.
Sure, the mapping is nice but the game lacks design and any fun. It's not even scary.

Oh, my. When I saw the word 'dead' I went a little sad.

Yeah, go to Source, man. I don't want this idea to die.

Thanks. I really hate this, too, but it's necessary. The lack of work was really making me sad, too. Hopefully, now it will change. As well as the fact that we will get a readable color for the comments.

No, don't go to source, will totally kill your project.

If don't trust me, google Daikatana (and they were +100 people)

I don't have a deadline, and all my previous work was pretty crappy. Also, see Wilson's Chronicles. Thanks for the concern, SysOp, as well as your enormous amount of guidance, but this is the best option for me - just checking if it is for you guys, as well.

Going to Source means you'll probably get more mappers. Herp derp, as you didn't know that already.

@SysOp: Maybe the 100+ ppl were the reason for the failture.
Quantity != quality. Lack of coordination, demotivation and lazyness in group dynamics.

So you shouldn't exclusively blame the engine switch for the failture.

Beside that switching from GoldSrc to Source shouldn't be to much of a hurdle for you compared to the ones that change e.g. from Source to UDK or Cryengine.

I'm sure it's possible to import the Goldsrc maps into Hammer, since it's basically only a newer version of the editor.
Recompiling props for source shouldn't be the issue, too.

So the main problem is the coding. I ain't got experience with that, but i guess it's not much harder then coding for GoldSrc.

I don't think it'll be a problem for most people if it's in Source, other than people who don't have Half Life 2 or anything else. But, it's just 5 dollars...
Also, Source has more capabilities in terms of graphics (as far as I know) and it's more optimized (?).
All in all, Source will probably be a good way to go.

Yes. Source seems to be the better choice for capabilities. It would be easier on you to make it a mod for the Half-life games as well, but if you went to tf2 you'd get alot more people possibly playing it (considering its free).
