The Wastelands.
Vast areas between Combine controlled cities. A land long forgotten by human, infested with Xen wildlife. Full of abandoned settlements and dead trees. The only infrastructure that is maintained is the railway, used by the Combine.
In Half-Life 2: Forgotten Lands you are given a chance to explore those areas, while trying to find a way inside City 17.
