It's been over two years since Ground Control first graced our PC's. Its failure to gain mass popularity like
other RTS games on the market, i.e. Westwood's Command & Conquer series, MS Age of Empires to name but two has always astounded me. Sure there are the GC die hards' out there, but at the moment they come no where near the number of fans of the above-mentioned games. Many have their theories and explanations, I have none really.
Any way enough already, let's get on with this mod. It's taken me the good part of six months to complete it, I've spent most of my week-ends and free time doing it, and it's been very much a labour of love. I hope that if you've played Ground Control before you'll like the changes I've done. Please bear in mind that the changes I've modified were first introduced by "Tweaks" in our original mod "The Sigma Incident" but hopefully I've improved on these. I've allowed the player to field units from the other two factions, increasing the players' choice of units and also introducing new tactics to the game.
The major changes I've introduced have been quite extensive, firstly to tie in with the story line,
the support units have been altered, all units classed as support units are able to load infantry and also heal other units.
The only non loadable infantry unit is the local militia, as this caused problems within the game, so I disabled this function.
You'll notice that the player no longer has access to the Crayven Ocelot, Hog or firecracker; these are now the sole property of the Sigma Corporation. The templars which I've renamed to the Sisterhood have now the ability to heal other units.
Although the player won't be able to select them in this campaign, the OND Crusaders have now been Changed into A.R.D units, and are dependent on the OND APC. If the APC is destroyed so are the A.R.D's, if any one wants to know A.R.D stands for Advanced Reece Driod unit.
The story goes that they were created by the Reece Corporation to work in mines and hostile environments, basically they were created as worker droids, but the military saw their potential for the battlefield.
Assault units, most of them any way are able to target aerodynes, that's if the player has selected the appropriate weapon type. I've changed some of the names around and also given units different functions, it's up to the player what they can and can't do with them. I could have written a whole book on the changes I made and the reasoning behind it, but I thought people would soon get bored, that's if they haven't already ;)
The story:
I've set this several years after the original Ground
Control story, in fact its set in the year 2525. There
have been several corporation wars, which has altered the
corporations' structure and purposes dramatically. Many
smaller corporations have come into being and separated
themselves from the two major corporations, the Crayven
and the Sigma Corporation.
These two have been at war for some years now, but
recently there has been a lull in the fighting and an un-
easy truce has come into existence, how long this will
last is any ones guess....who will be first to break this
truce, and more importantly what have the other
corporations been up to, only time will tell as this
story unfolds. Will you take the challenge?
How to install the mod:
(IMPORTANT Make sure you have the Dark Conspiracy add on pact to play this mod or patch 1011)
I've created a batch file to launch the mod, but before you can run it you'll need to place the rebel0.sdf file into your data folder. On my machine the path is C:\Sierra\GC\data once you've done this you'll need to put the batch file to run the mod in to your ground control folder, in my case it's C:\Sierra\GC
Now you're ready to run the mod, just launch the batch file, to un-install the mod just launch the batch file again and it will take care of restoring the original files
To play the mod you need to start up the first DC mission and then exit out of it.
Go back to the main screen and select custom games. Next select the Rebellion campaign to play :-)
I've included a few extra maps, mainly skirmish ones, you can access these via the custom map window,
I've also included one or two multiplayer maps for you to try, anyway have fun. BTW these extra maps are BETA, and are from finished, I've included them so you can un-sdf them and complete them yourself
