Following the events of Crash Course the survivors find themselves trapped on a free-way intersection surrounded by the infected horde. If it seemed like the world was coming to an end before it certainly does now! Volcanic activity has suddenly started occuring on a massive scale resulting in deadly lava flows and destructive earthquakes. Breaking down on an unstable freeway during an earthquake just adds to the string of bad luck the downtrodden survivors have dealt with! Now they must fight their way off the freeway. But once they reach the ground they'll have to watch out for lava flow.......

Gridlock is a map entry for the Natural Disasters competition on L4Dmaps. An introduction to Gridlock

The Natural Disasters competition, being held on L4Dmaps, has two main requirements:

  1. The map must be playable in both co-op and survival mode.
  2. The map must include at least 2 different natural disasters.

Those of you who have followed my team's work know we have been building the L4D2 campaign Life's a Beach as well as heavily contributing to the L4D2 community podcast "The Saferoom". Lou Saffire (a host on The Saferoom) approached me (Andrew Bennison) with the idea of collaborating for the competition, within a few days we already had a 1st draft of the freeway built! A month later and the project is coming to a close with the release date just under a week away. This means we can lift our embargo and show you screenshots and footage of the map and of course the playable version (coming soon!). I've included a summary of what to expect in Gridlock in our description (top of the page) and a trailer (also coming soon!) should give you a good idea of what to expect.

Our aims

From the beginning of the project we had several clear aims we wished to achieve.

  1. Create an new and interesting environment in L4D2
  2. Implement natural disasters that complement the environment and create interesting game-play experiences
  3. Ensure a quality experience from start to finish in all areas

The public will of course be the judge of whether or not we have lived up to these aims which is why, upon release, we need you to play our map and if you like it vote for us on L4Dmaps! We will provide the download and voting links as soon as they are available.

We will be posting a short trailer as well as uploading some more images soon, in the meantime you can add Gridlock to your watchlist and view our page on L4Dmaps here. If you have any questions or feedback on the work you've seen so far please do let us know!
Thanks for reading and check back soon!
