The mod make changes mainly to weapons and world detail. For example you can carry all weapons together, the blood, bullet holes etc do not fades anymore. Also a mod with HD Textures can be downloaded.

Same error here with the steam 1.08 (no mods) version. it didn't started. The Rivarez Mod (v1.04) must be installed first? I only installed the HD Textures. After unsinstalling the game worked fine

I tested too this version:

- The first time i used the patch, when it was done and supposedly it should close, it threw this message I.imgur.com and every time i try to close the window (with the X) showed it again. I closed it via task manager. It never showed again in succesives installations.

- When is installed the mod, if i launch it via Steam it shows this I.imgur.com (Can't start FEAR, Error 51) and if directly executed FEAR.exe, it shows this I.imgur.com (Steam Error...).

There isn't any mods installed (in fact, i had dinput8 fix, bigger letter mod and a spanish translation, but i tested too without any of them and it does the same).

Thanks!

Download this Drive.google.com exe, run it and tell me what the info will be shown in appeared window with "Debug" title caption.

Tested:

- The only thing it does with the Debug window is appear in the beggining when i start the patch with a "0" inside I.imgur.com . I need to push the "Ok" button because i can't do anything more until i do that, the window closed, and there isn't any other info to show when it installed or anything else.

- This time, again, appeared the error when it's going to finish I.imgur.com . I can minimize the window when i push "Ok" (Or "Aceptar" in my case) but the patch window doesn't close. When is going to close itself showed this and if i try to click the X button also shown it.
But like i said before, it only happened the first time i used the patch, succesive times that error doesn't happen.

Tested the EXE file you provided (2.0.1) adding it to the 2.0 folder.

I have all the same issues, it doesn't work for me.

EDIT: Tested the new 2.0.1 package with the same results.

When i first used the 2.0.1 EXE (copied in the 2.0 package folder), Yes.

When i used the 2.0.1 package, no, but if it's like every exe you passed me, the first time does, but succesive ones doesn't.

After installing the textures, I got a Steam Error: FEAR failed to start (error code 51). I tried starting the installer with admin rights, but it is the same. Btw. clean FEAR install. I also tried installing your gameplay mod before and after the textures, but the same error. Without the texture mod it plays fine. Can you help, please?

Yes. I tried the non Steam option too. Should I try to run it with the original exe? I can think of nothing else to try. Clearly something is wrong, but I don't know what. Have you any other ideas?

I hope this might help someone else too.

Hello. I tried to replay F.E.A.R. today, and there were many issues to tackle, but it worked for a while. I installed your HD Textures v2.0.2 mod and MMod. I also had some problems with soft shadows, but I gave up on getting them to work with AA enabled. The game mostly works, but this awful thing Imgur.com happens whenever an in-game in-engine cutscene plays, like the one with Alma's labor or when she evaporates the Delta Squad soldiers. It just turns into this changing white noise graphical glitch. Has anyone encountered the same problem and could you help me please? Thank you. Great job with the mod btw, it looks great so far, but I'll have to make a clean install if I don't solve this.

EDIT: I solved the issue. It was the MMod shader in Default.archcfg. Just remove the line FEARMModV2_SikkShaders.Arch00.

EDIT 2: A new issue. There are missing textures with HD Textures mod installed. I made a fresh install and installed your mod, and I don't know how to fix it. It's a real shame because the difference is very noticeable. Well, better luck next time.

EDIT 3: I finally looked into your ReadMe file. The minimum/maximum texture resolution switch fixed the issue, but now I can't get to Interval 02 because it crashes when I press a key after loading. New levels can be loaded by setting compatibility mode to Windows XP (Service Pack 2) for the executable, but it disables Steam Overlay. So I enable compatibility, load the new chapter, save and then disable it again. Sometimes it doesn't crash on chapter change.

EDIT 4: Sometimes, my gun models or other textures disappear, so I have to save and exit and maybe try the minimum/maximum switch. Sometimes the game crashes when saving or proceeding through the game. I should perhaps install your Lite version to deal with crashes, but I don't want to lose the visual clarity.

So yeah, this mod is totally worth it if you have the divine patience to deal with frequent crashes.

Tested 2.0.2, now the installer seems to work fine without any error or issue, and when i start the game the game launches as normal.

BUT...

- Compared to the 1.0 version, this one seems to be more unstable. In fact, i didn't see the second level with more than one hour playing, because it crashed a lot of times. Most of them when that second level was loading, before it created the autosave.
Maybe you can say "Ok, do the minimun setting trick", but if i need to do it every new level load (and some between too), better don't use this at all...
Also one time, the game crashed in the middle autosave of the first level (when waiting to the other guy to push the shelves allowing you to open the door) because i broke a glass window at the same time when it was autosaving... maybe the crashes are more related of how the game is accessing the files into the hard drive... Are you testing it in a SSD?

- I saw less missings textures than with 1.0. It's true that the first time i tested the mod i saw a missing texture in about 15 seconds in ( I.imgur.com ) but that was one of two or three times at most that i was aware to, something that didn't happen with 1.0 that have more of this (although, with 1.0 at the beginning of the second level the missing textures were happening every time, and this time i haven't could reach that point because the crashes).

- Other thing i've noticed this time is for me the game didn't use antialiasing at all, although is configured within the game (in the screenshot above it's noticeable). If i forced in Nvidia 3D settings, it does, but it creates flickering in some textures (especially with lights). It's not related with your mod, it happens with the vanilla game too.

-- UPDATE --

EDIT about Antialiasing issue: As bodo635 point out below:

bodo635 wrote: I put the 0x004030C0 bit in the Antialiasing compatibility setting in the F.E.A.R. profile in Nvidia Profile Inspector, and I changed Antialiasing - Mode to Override any application setting, and I set Antialiasing - Setting to 4x [4x Multisampling], and that worked for me.

That worked for me too!

-- END UPDATE --

Because that thing with the antialiasing, i tested too to change your d3d9.dll (what, by the way, you didn't say any information that what it does, where you found it or if you build it yourself) with the dgVoodoo2 one, configured. With dgVoodoo2 i can use antialiasing, but it also introduces some flickering in some textures (the first room you enter in the game flickers entirely, for example, but not with lights like when i force it in Nvidia 3D Settings), and if you use it with your mod, it's like when i tested with 1.0, there are some missing textures (many more than with your d3d9.dll bundled in 2.0.2, in my opinion) and the game crashes a couple of times too, so i discarded it.

So, i don't know... this engine seems a bit refractory to a HD mod. It's a shame because the textures look beautiful and they amaze me every time i test any new version of the mod.

EDIT: Also to point out, i tested it too with the lite version, with the same results. That textures look great too! But i have no performace issues at all with either normal or lite version, they are stability issues.

I put the 0x004030C0 bit in the Antialiasing compatibility setting in the F.E.A.R. profile in Nvidia Profile Inspector, and I changed Antialiasing - Mode to Override any application setting, and I set Antialiasing - Setting to 4x [4x Multisampling], and that worked for me. I'm going to test the Lite pack as well now, and if that doesn't work, I'll uninstall the mod for the time being. It's too frustrating, but the textures looked spectacular.

EDIT: Alt-Tabbing a few times helps when dealing with missing textures because of this mod, but I uninstalled it. The visual experience, clarity, and fidelity are lower without it, but the game looks excellent in vanilla anyway.

First, congratulations for these textures: they look really great.

A couple glitches: in-game monitors often don't show what they were supposed to show (like Maples doing his things) and I once got stuck to the ceiling of a descending elevator when I knelt in it. I also couldn't pick up pistol ammo.

About crashes and instability, it is very important not to use these textures with other mods that edit graphics. Unless they were deliberately made to be compatible, they will crash your game or massively increase the number of black or missing textures.

My impression this playthrough (with both the textures and the Rivarez Mod) was that crashes and missing textures are far more frequent in levels that take you outside, like the very first one when you are knocked out by Fettel, or especially the ones between the kidnapping of Alice Wade and entering the final high-tech facility. This group in particular was very problematic.

I tried playing around with the textures with Ordenador. I'm not an expert, though. I tried halving the size of the textures with a side beyond 2000px, which of course made them much smaller, but the visual hit was very perceivable.
I also tried using some other options (like mask compression) which made the files take less memory without resizing them. There were fewer missing textures afterwards, but the game crashed pretty often (it's also possible that there were fewer missing textures just because of random luck when I reloaded the levels).

The AMD software lets you pump up AA and anisotropic filtering, and I thought the result looked really good.

I also applied the original 4GB patch after installing the mod, which I believe made the game more stable. Unfortunately, I didn't think of checking whether the mod installer actually had edited the exe file.

Got to the level where the two helicopters are flying in and most of their parts are missing. All you see is a bit of the fuselage hovering in a black sky. Then, when I started walking around, I got stuck against a wall missing most of its textures before everything blanked out and then came back as all black with my crosshairs showing. Couldn't do anything except close the game.

If any of y'all are still bending over backwards trying to get the installer .exe to work as I have been, I discovered what the issue was and it installed like a charm.

For some reason, putting the installer and it's folder in the game directory and trying to install it from there, screws up the .exe process and it gets stuck and does nothing. I found out the solution was to simply extract the contents in a separate folder entirely, and start that way.

Hope this helps!

I've tried DL & installing v2.0.2 multiple times, with fresh installs and deletes. Bought it in the Complete Pack sold on Steam, according to patch notes v2.0.2 fixed the issue Steam users were having but every time I install the textures it won't load citing the 'Error 51', but as soon as I uninstall the mod via the installer it loads via Steam, the folder location and config *.exe's immediately.

I have tried putting the *.rar in a separate folder as Quake_Doomguy recommended but no luck there either, Steam just will not launch the game with the mod pack installed. I am beyond keen to smash out all 5 F.E.A.R. games but dealing with this mod is killing my enthusiasm faster than a chipotle enema.

Any help is appreciated.

It starts up and works,
but over time, (especially with quicksaving and quickloading)
it's inevitable that after a few minutes textures will start to disappear,
and eventually the game will crash.
Beautiful textures, but very unstable in my experience.
I'm using the GOG version, and chose “non-Steam” option.

Is it safe to assume that this is still too unstable to use for a fresh playthrough in 2023?
I'm going to run this game on my YouTube channel and if it's gonna crash a lot I'd rather stick with old school textures.

Thanks for any advice.

Usually works best when you apply a Large Address Aware (or 4GB) patch to the .exe file that would help stabilize loading. Also helps to use Steamless if you're using the Steam version to remove the DRM. But it is best to stick to the original textures if you don't want water paint-like textures.

Not a huge fan of this. Makes loading slower than it needs to be and the amount of unnecessary detail baked into the textures make them seem flat, void of any depth, and sometimes makes text ,big or small, appear messier to read than the original. When you do see the bumpmaps though, it's plain to see the compression artifacts and how it doesn't fit the upscaled textures.

TyrannoWright & Everyone

I just finished playing through F.E.A.R. & the 2 expansions.
I was using the 4GB patch without the HD textures.

My main issue was freezing and crashing to the desktop.
It would happen during level ends, or level transitions sometimes.
Most of my crashes happened in the base game.
I had one crash in Extraction Point, and one crash in Perseus Mandate.

My workaround was to stop using quick saving & quick loading.
Also, when I would reach a checkpoint in the game.
I would reload that checkpoint to let the game refresh itself.
That seemed to work pretty well once I started doing that.

Glad I didn't mess with this graphics mod as the game
unmodded is pretty unstable these days.

The game is great and playable but really needs a remake to resolve all the technical problems that it has.
