"The Chernobyl disaster killed over 9,000 people and ruined the lives of countless others. The so-called "bird flu" thus far has killed a mere 150 people. One event blamed on "human error"; the other an unseen force of nature. The world is in a state of panic over this flu, fearful that they might be the next victim of this "deadly" pandemic- children and adults donning surgical masks in an attempt to spare themselves from this silent killer. Why is that? Why is it that a man-made disaster is so easily forgotten, swept under the carpet of our collective minds? And yet the bird flu, with negligible casualties, can cause so much terror? Perhaps we feel a certain sense of control over those things that humans have created. We fool ourselves into believing that our omnipotent governments will come rescue us from the repetition of our disastrous past. A few regulations here, some new environmental laws there, and all is well.
But who is to say that these events that cause so much more panic are not crafted by the hand of mankind? We have the technology to develop biological weapons and pharmaceutical companies certainly stand to reap huge profits from the "next big outbreak". Even the events of 9/11 have spelled huge windfalls for private enterprise and governments alike- the massive tendrils of government probing even deeper into the private lives of those it was formed to protect while defense contractors wallow in the pools of billions of dollars in appropriations. So who is really at the helm of mankind's destiny? Just ask yourself- who stands to benefit and who stands to lose? If you take anything away from my soliloquy, just remember this... trust no one."
Welcome to EnigmaComplex, a new action thriller modification for Half-Life 2. In the first of our episodic releases, titled "Prologue", the player will find himself in the shoes of a young man whose life has been virtually stripped of its humanity. A life ruined by those he once believed were serving the good of mankind. Forced to reside inside the walls of a decrepit rural motel, far from the urban lifestyle he once knew, our hero reconciles himself to a life of shattered dreams and hopelessness.
Our story begins with the arrival of a mysterious package from an even more enigmatic benefactor who alerts our hero to the massive police force converging on his location. What has this man done to illicit such vindictive retaliation and why are the police trying to jail him at all costs? Who is the mysterious benefactor and what interests does he serve? What knowledge does this one man possess that could turn what we know about our world on its head?
