In this mod, I will be looking to overhaul the vanilla game, step by step. This is a beta WIP and I intend to have a release after each stage or version is completed. New units, features, regions, and gameplay from multiple mods and communities awaits!

Description

The biggest release from VE mod is here! In this mod, the map has been completely overhauled, the Romans have finally been unified and 3 new factions now are available! Plus, the post marian units are back in!

This mod doesn’t run on RTW Gold but RTW Alexander, if you’re using steam

Thanks, I really enjoy your mod! One question. You've written we have to delete v18 first, but do I also have to remove the patch and the hotfix of v18? (Would be a problem since I've overwritten the original files with the patch/hotfix). Apart from that, as always good work, keep it up, man!

Delete it all, and install v19 as a fresh installation

Hi, great work, but I have trouble starting RTW Alexander. When I see the loading screen of the game the error "Failed to read censored word dictionary file: data//chat_filter.san" pops up and I can't start the game. Do you know a solution to this?

You probably installed wrong. Make sure the path is correct. RTW Alexander/HRTW
Is what it should be

Yeah I'm getting this too, definitely in the correct RTW alexander file within steam cause i've tried a good few times, i've even unistalled and reinstalled Alexander on my steam.
When i try to install EB i get an error saying that rome isn't properly installed so might just be my computer messing up.

Ye I had the same issue but figured it out. Go to HRTW folder and move the HRTW folder within the HRTW folder to /Alexander. Make sure it's HRTW when extracting to begin with, and not HRTW(1) etc if downloaded multiple times. Also, have to do above things for the patch too most likely.

Make sure you follow installation correctly. You need the RTW Alexander expansion, and then see above comment for installation path

Can't place "-show_err -mod:HRTW -noalexander" in target line. There are some unacceptable sybmobls. Win10/ As i assume the mod should be installed RTW/Alexander/HRTW. Or should i put "Data" from HRTW to Alexander folder? Haven't had issues with installing a mod for a long time

Hiya mate, loving the mod so far only a couple issues...

1) The battle camera seems to pan really slowly when double clicking on a unit card or the unit on the battlefield and moving via the arrow keys will interrupt the camera whilst it's moving to that selected unit, not that big of an issue since I can click on the ground or map and move the camera that way, just a slight annoyance.

2) CTD's are still a problem for me, only on battle start sometimes and seemingly at random with no obvious trigger or error message, none yet after winning a battle or taking a settlement (previous versions and vanilla would crash often when exterminating a settlement etc). Will do further testing and report on issues where they appear and send my PC specs if you wish.

3) Not really a problem exactly but I'm curious on your choice to remove the families and turn the Romans into one huge faction? The way I see it this will make late game post marian gameplay too easy since there is no civil war? The way I see it Roman gameplay would almost always follow this trend...

Early game - cheap troops that are pre-reform and low-ish morale so it's entirely possible to lose to factions that peak earlier but have a lower power ceiling.

mid game - just after reform the challenge would be to supply your front lines with new upgraded troops.

Late game - Civil war, other roman families are often powerhouses late into the game, julii ruling most of Europe, Brutii ruling most of greece and the eastern provinces etc.

Again, loving the mod so far when everything works it is simply the best but CTD's were a common problem even with vanilla so I always save often and Rome has the luxury of a favourable autoresolve!

My only other problem would be that Carthage ironically leaves Carthage grossly undefended so it's easy to blitz it! Total war AI has always been sorta derpy though so it's not a game breaker lol.

Not sure why Rome 1 crashes so much, the engine just seems to struggle on modern hardware I think and I've tried running on only one core but to no avail. This might just be a "me" problem though and the mod is good enough to suck up a CTD here and there, it's only painful when playing Parthia/Scythia where you have no hope of autoresolve to get out of a CTD scenario, heroic victories are a must if you want to play the faction well.

1) nothing that I can do to fix it really, it’s an engine bug.
2) some never experience any and some experience a lot.. tough to determine
3) historical reasoning and honestly I was tired of the 4 family system. Adding the 3 new factions adds more depth to the campaign map. Will make factions more interesting in the late game in the future

Glad you’re enjoying it!

Was enjoying for quite long, maybe turn 100 on the two campaigns I was playing carthage and greece but now I just CTD after an hour of gameplay with no errors. Steam version also tried torrent version. Im trying all this reinstalling, disabling auto saves and checking resolution crap. If anyone has suggestions please shoot But damn this was the best total war experience while it was working hopefully I can conquer this map one day :(

RTW tends to crash after playing after a certain amount of time. Best to log off after an hour or two and come back later.

Don't bother with this if you have the pirated version by PROPHET (as far as I know it's the only one with Alexander). It won't work. I believe because in this release the alexander expansion is in the same folder as the base game.

Mod will work regardless of installation style. Steam separates alexander from bi and vanilla, but the disc versions all use the same directory. All you need is vanilla installed with the Alexander engine available to run the game.

I see. I don't know what I did wrong, I really tried to get it working. This mod is exactly what I was looking for to get back into this childhood game. It worked fine on the campaign map but crashed when I tried to play a quick battle from the menu.

Congrats on the new version of the mod! The new changes look intriguing. I certainly like the mix of old and new that this mod provides a player. Also grateful to see the Post Marian Romans get expanded upon.

In my first (Brutii) playthrough of Version 18 I didn't know that the event would leave me with just legionnaires, so you can imagine how shocked I was when that happened in the middle of my game. I actually enjoyed the challenge though! Precisely because I was completely unprepared for it. Suddenly I could only recruit in a few cities with a high enough barracks/colony tier, relying on old Maniples and mercenaries to hold the line whilst I frantically built back up. Made for a really unique game! I also found it immersive that I had to rely on mercenaries to fill other battlefield roles and increase the numbers of my armies. Just like the empire during it's twilight years.

Another highlight in that game involved about a dozen full stacks that I'd been building up in Southern Italy getting wiped out by Mt. Etna as I was marching them North to declare war on Rome. That set my succession attempt back at least two decades! XD

I really liked your mod, but I would like to give you a suggestion by placing a passage through the Alps, because all the other Total War games I played had at least one crossing near Milan or more to the east near Venice

I found it very difficult to move to Germania or Galia without this crossing

This update went in the right direction. except NO CIVIL WAR. which means no real endgame for Roman players. Civil war is what makes Vanilla Rome a joy to play. this mod is probably the best MOD going forward, BUT just took a huge U-turn in my opinion WITHOUT Civil War.

ahowl...come on man.. Romans vs Romans end game is what its all about brooo. not to say the new factions are not beautiful and well made because they truly are.

Also.. ahowl have you ever watched decisive battles, Time commanders etc???
both TV shows used the Rome Total War engine, notice alot of the units they use in it are vanilla but not in the base game. Could find some things you like, just a thought. Both series are fully uploaded on youtube. Id post links for you but this doesnt let me.

Ps. CTD every 2-3 battles. not sure why. keep up the cracking work ahowl and I look forward to more polished patches!

I've been playing RTW for 15 years and registered an account just to let you know that I think your mod is probably my favourite, as you incorporate all the good parts of many mods I enjoy.

The trait system for example is like XGM but on steroids, and the choice of ADDING fitting music, instead of entirely doing away with the already wonderful OST is a very good choice indeed.

What makes this mod short from perfect IMO is the lack of polish at some points. Why do peasants cost 31k denari? Also, I think using BI instead of ALX would have been a smarter choice, as the AI doesn't know how to do naval invasions in this versions, so AI Rome only expands into Gaul.

Another thing that bugs me are the images and descriptions of some buildings, as many of them have placeholder or a graphic which doesn't fit the theme of the game.

There are also some very minor balancing issues that may need attention: Endgame units are not that much different in stats from 1 tier lower units, but take 2 turns to recruit instead of 1, making them unfeasible (Seleucid legionnaires vs hypaspists is one example). This is just a minor issue though.

However, the rest is pitch perfect: the units, factions, music addition, TRAITS (wow), ship construction, & (probably unintentional bug from your part) building system. I notice that now it's possible to build ALL shrines and temples at once, provided that you issue all the orders at the same time. Personally, I love it.

I'm sad that the romans are unified :( guess I gotta stick with v18. Please consider making a version with rome split up into different families like in vanilla.

Looks good this game.
Peasant are really expensive for some reason, and it takes 29 turns to finish.
Also could you give numidians better ports, lack of high end ports limits them a lot, annoyingly in my opinion. Same about roads, all factions should have at least paved roads.
Alos many factions have way too big unit raster, I would prefer like 2 types of every unit. Two types of missile, two or three types of infantry, two types of cavalry. Keep it simple if you ask me.

All troops and buildings are really expensive and you can't progress because the army upkeep is always more than the cities income.
They should definetely rebalance the economy a bit
