What is the dead zone?
The dead zone is the exclusion zone covering North America. Its point of origin is hypothesized to be the Trinity Site in New Mexico.

In 1955, a top secret military project to attempt time travel failed resulting in a continental time quake. The warping of the space time continuum would destroy all trace of organic life in North America.

Why can the dead zone not be entered?
The ongoing time quake has destabilize matter, time and space in the region. Organic matter can be electrocuted alongside rapid ageing and radiation exposure. Any vehicle or aircraft entering the zone will suffer catastrophic system failure.

Why is the dead zone so important?
Nothing at present can enter the zone but it doesn't mean nothing can get out of the zone. The rapid technological pace of the ESDF, PRA and Paradigm has been largely attributed to the out of place artifacts (OOPArt) which have been retrieved from the zone.

How have the factions retrieved out of place artifacts and what is their origin?
When a time quake occurs, smaller aftershocks may appear across the entire planet. Often during these events a out of place artifact is found near a aftershock. A out of place artifact is a item of technology which surpasses the current technology of the age.

Their are numerous theories on their origin but many scientists and groups now argue that these items are from different time lines or parallel worlds.

What technology has been retrieved from out of place artifacts?
Everything from data stores (the first out of place artifact was a advanced computer) to a military aircraft or a industrial machine for refining raw materials. The pace at which all fields of science from military to civilian grew substantially.

Some artifacts reveal information about unknown organisations such as "NATO", "Warsaw Pact", "GDI" and "Nod".

How long has human civilization been living with the dead zone?
It is now 1986 or 32 years since the dead zone incident but current human technology progress is believed to be at 2040 - 2050 standards. Each of the major factions is now involved in a bitter struggle to defeat their rivals and access the inner regions of the Dead Zone.

Much of the conflict revolves around a lack of resources whilst the other idea is that human urge to gain more knowledge can never be satisfied.
