The Soryu(Blue Dragon) class submarine is the new generation of conventionally powered attack submarine developed and deployed by the Japanese Self Defense Force.
With a submerged displacement of 4200 ton, the AIP powered submarine is the largest of it kind in the World. The Air-Independent-Propulsion (AIP) system enables the submarine to travel submerged for a long period of time, by burning diesel using on-board carried oxygen and extracting mechanical work using Stirling engines. The AIP system allows the ship to cruise under water at low speed with a max range of ~11000 km, nearly duplicating the unlimited endurance of their nuclear powered counterparts.
The submarine carries a load of 30 weapons, including the Type 89 torpedo with a range of 50km, a max speed of 102 km/h and a warhead of 267 kg, as well as the submarine launched version of harpoon missile, with a max speed of 864 km/h, a max range of 124+ km, and a warhead of 221 kg.
The goal of the submarine would be to control the important straits around the island country, ensuring the important shipping routes won't be severed in war time by enemy submarine forces.
