Project Valkyrie is a multiplayer first person shooter developed for the Source Engine. Players suit up in the Valkyrie suit, equipped with a powerful arm cannon integrated into the suit and the ability to morph into a sphere for faster mobility and different attack capabilities. Previously titled Three Month Mod, it was thus named for the amount of time it had taken us on the project. Three months from conception to release. Everything was done simultaneously, from pre-production concepts, to code, to mapping. Unfortunately, due to a delay with the public release of the Orange Box SDK (we couldn't release without it, even though we were already Orange Box!) our initial release had been delayed.

A short teaser trailer for the upcoming release of Project Valkyrie

Posted by on

With Christmas upon us, we decided to release a short teaser trailer for everyone waiting to get Project Valkyrie in their Christmas stocking.

The video clocks in at 35 seconds and features the song "Typhoid Mary" by Paper Sailboat.

A larger version of the video is available on our ModDB profile. Of course, while you're there, we'd love to have your vote if you're interested in the mod!

Looks fun...

I have a question though, are you more vulnerable when you are in ball mode? The reason I ask is because it seems like it would be much easier being a smaller, more maneuverable minelayer, than it would being a 6 foot tall person with a gun. Perhaps a balance tweak where in ball form you can't take as much damage as when you are running is in order.

I applaud you guys taking a scifi idea you like in your own original direction. It would be great to see more mods like that and less cookie-cutters of existing comercial fiction. :)

Hmmm, a different type of mod. I am really glad to see a total conversion mod. I will track it and thank you for your hard work.

Just found this mod via the Best of 2007, and it looks very good, but I have a question.

Was this mod at one time a Metroid mod that was changed to avoid legal issues with Nintendo? It's got all the ingredients: Power-suited female character, morph ball that rolls around and drops bombs, differently functioning beams and missiles, gun-arm.

Don't get me wrong, it looks awesome, but the idea was clearly taken point for point from Nintendo.

dunno why i'm replying to this over a year and a half later, but, no it was never intended to be an exact metroid mod.

If you listen to the very first modcast when we were interviewed, we described how it started;
in that, we were going to work on something else, and then we had this crazy idea 'lets make a mod in 3 months' and we decided to base it on metroid (originally JUST the morph ball) but then it ended up evolving into using the same type of weapons etc as well.
Honestly didn't want to release without having something 100% unique, but when meeting the whole '3 month' goal (which turned into 3 and a half months because of the delayed SDK release, for which we were told not to release until after the SDK was officially released.) things didn't really turn out that way.

there are a number of other things after the release that we've slowly been playing with that don't exist in metroid, but it's kind of hard to make anything that actually 'fits' with the type of gameplay without it ending up BEING similar to metroid anyway. the curse of taking someone elses ideas (happens all the time, retail and mods)
