In 1791, Gendarmerie Nationale was organized into 28 divisions for a total of 6400 gendarmes, 1600 NCO and 700 officers.
The base formation, the brigade, was composed of 5 gendarmes en 1 NCO.
Brigades were grouped into companies (12 to 18 brigades per companies) and companies were grouped into divisions (6 to 8 companies per division).
In 1797, Gendarmerie was organized into 27 divisions and a total of 1750 mounted and 750 foot brigades.
If their main duty was to maintain public order, they have been also use to fight foreign enemies, like the battle of Hondschoote, as well as enemies within such in Vendée.
