Hey, I'm Tony Yotes, but just Yotes works just fine. I was born in the '90s, which in my humble opinion, was the perfect age to grow up playing awesome games across all generations. That childhood inspired me to pay those good times forward and create my own video game empire. Check out everything I do at www.yotesgames.com

Report RSS Dragon Souls Prologue Status Report #1

Unicorn Training released a week ago (Get it here!) and another project is already underway! It's full steam ahead as I try to make another game before app stores close for the Holiday frenzy. This is also the beginning of my new blogging schedule where I only post twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays). I want to do Status Reports on Tuesdays so I can show weekend sales (which I assume are more interesting) and I'll do weekly posts on Friday showing the most interesting developments on whatever my current project is. This report will stand in place for this Tuesday's so don't expect any updates until this upcoming Friday.

Here's week one of Dragon Souls Prologue and a new Yotes Games!
Check out Unicorn Training sales data below!

The protagonist was inspired by young Gohan.

Completed:

  • Unicorn Training Patches (TONS of Them)
  • Dragon Souls Prologue Game Design Document
  • Updated List of Android App Stores (Only 11 out of 25 Are Worthwhile)
  • Android App Stores: Google Play, Amazon Apps, Samsung Apps, SlideME, Yandex, Opera Mobile Store, AppsLib, AppBrain, and GetJar (For Demos)
  • Found The First Ever Let's Play Of A Game I Made
Lessons Learned:
  • I Can Just Barely Taste Success. $100 on Launch Day Won't Pay Any Bills, But At Least I'm Making Something Now.
  • So Many app Stores Are Flooded With Garbage That Doesn't Even Try... I Really Want This Standard To Change.
  • Having People Know I Exist (As a Developer) Is Great. Hopefully I Can Retain These Followers / Fans / Customers For Future Releases. That's When Things Will Get Good.
  • For The Love Of GOD, Please Conduct Months of Playtesting.

Cheap Macbooks on Apple's website cost $1100, not the $2000 I saw a over year ago. I made $200 from Unicorn Training so far and sales only decrease from here without a boost. Maybe I'll have enough money to get one by my next birthday in October. Just in time for my next game's release.

I've been waiting forever to see some interesting numbers here and now I have something. If this keeps up through the winter I may actually make some money out of this. I can finally see my plan working. With months of hard work comes the ultimate payoff. If I keep improving as a developer and working toward making the mobile market a place for quality games then the money and public praise will come.

Unicorn Training is one of the Top 10 Paid RPGs on Google Play!

I know I've reached some sort of new plane of credibility because now I'm getting spam mail about boosting my app rankings and increasing download traffic. There was also the trouble of Samsung publishing to deal with this week. I remember having my frustrations with getting Feed The Plant up before but thought all those issues vanished since they transformed their app submission website into something more developer friendly.

The Samsung version of Unicorn Training is delayed because there is a bug on their website that won't allow me to press the submit button due to a pair of dropboxes conflicting with the apk's permissions. I can't fully explain it because I don't completely understand why this happens myself. For now I'm sticking to the solution that worked before which was to keep trying once a day until it goes through.

Pokemon Omega Ruby came out and I'm planning to only allow it to distract me for 3 hours a night. There's just too much work to do to take extended time off. As many other games there are to play, I'm making this one a priority because I'm making a Pokemon inspired game next and playing the newest release with an analytic mindset can only lead to a better product on my end.

Alongside that I can't help but play Smash Bros. WiiU for at least an entire day at a friend's house. I can't get it for myself until this gamedev thing stabilizes and my final semester's tuition is paid for. There's also finals, school projects, and tons of homework to suffer through. Busy, busy, busy as always, but at least I have more proof that it'll be worth it.

Here's to the hope that I finish Dragon Souls Prologue before December 20th!

As of 11/23/14 Unicorn Training has peaked and started its decline. After just reaching the top 10, it is stabilizing around 20 downloads per day and falling to #14 on the top 10 paid RPGs list and even further in other categories. It's been a great ride and I finally have a success number to keep track of in my head! I can't wait to push my limits further and keep making bigger, better games.
