Oh mister 'art school', being a modeler myself I can say that clean references apposed to highly detailed paintings work better when trying to get a concept into a basic 3d form. With 3d modeling you can later add final details once you get the general shape of the object. These are perfect for the process of getting it into a basic form. I do agree that having high detailed images will help the 3d artist get an idea of the end result.
