I've never used an ATI card in Linux but Nvidia works fine. For reference I have an NVIDIA NVS 3100M with 512MB DDR3 and it runs Quake 4(native) and Left 4 Dead(wine).
I've heard bad things about ATI cards in Linux but I've never used one so maybe its just a rumour.
