Rise of Nations

Game review

First off, this is a slightly older game. Do not expect it to have incredible graphics and such.
Okay. This game focuses around building an empire and defeating your enemies. The resource system consists of wood, food, metal, wealth, oil, and knowledge. Each is obtained in a different fashion. this adds some variety from other games, but can be a hassle at times when the map that you are playing on has few to none of a certain resource. Each resource funds a unit, such as you can expect modern vehicles to need oil and metal, and soldiers to need food, etc. This works well because it gives you a guideline for what you can build. If you have masses of food, build infantry. Gallons of oil, construct tanks.
Gameplaywise, this game does not exceed expectations. It offers a challenge, but it can be very easy because of overpowered units such as the strategic bomber or the cruise missile. A beam of light bursts forth with the most overpowered(but understandably so) nuclear ICBM.
Gameplay suffers in another way, which is in nation variety. One or two nations might have a varient of a certain unit, but the rest have a basic unit. It makes for confusion on the field sometimes when you try to select you forces.
Where this game excels, though, is the way the player can advance his nation. For instance, the Germans, in the Ancient age, their warriors wield large broadswords. In the Modern Age, Volksgrenadiers stom through positions bolstered by fire from MG42's and Tiger tanks. The designers put very good historical accuracy in most parts. The British have the Lancaster bomber, the Russians have T-80 Main battle tanks, etc.
All in all, it is a fair game, but what makes it shine is the Conquer the world campaign-it can be time consuming, but it can be very entertaining rewriting history as a lowly nation.
As a fair game, it would receive a five, but the conquer the world is so good that it bolsters the rate by three points. Good game, Big Huge.
