Figured a way around that by entering the game as him for instance and then entering another wizards character id with play :)

Not when I click play but while it's loading the character it crashes but this happens to all the characters I've tried except when I play Abraxas Malfoy

Although depending on whom you choose to play as it can crash with certain characters, but I'm able to play as Abraxas Malfoy

Try unchecking ruler designer if it crashes while loading, worked for me (if it crashes and you've unchecked the right dlcs)
