The image seems to suggests that Snarks and Snark mines are actually apart of the Bullsquid's(Gallitoris terrateuthis) life cycle. They use their bile to attach eggs to the roofs of caves and as they begin to seep off they harden forming the Snark mine.When a potential host approaches the mine ruptures and release the snarks which begin trying to enter the host. If one success they begin to gestate until they grow into a juvenile which then emerges from the host as a Bullsquid. I like the concept.
