The point of the crosshair is mostly so you know which config setting you're on (shotty auto-reload/fire or the rest of the weapons when you hit j). To set it back to defaults, remove anything to do with crosshair in the config, and then type in the 5 or 6 different crosshair commands in the console (without a number after). It'll tell you the default, and you can set it to that to restore it to normal. Also the smaller crosshair makes it easier to aim.
