Project Zomboid

Early access game review

I do love this game, but the interface is still awful. The GUI needs some serious work, it's hard to click the object you want if it's superimposed on another object. Looks like they tried to address this recently with the inventory/loot popups, but I still can't seem to get the hang of these, it seems I always have to click through containers with items when the contents are not displayed. The positioning of those popups still annoy me for some reason. Due to the crappy mouse interface, certain hotkeys are not optional if you want to survive long. I think the GUI has an unacceptably high learning curve for newbies compounded by the fact that while you're trying to figure out how to control the game you are getting gnawed on by zombies. The combat/sneaking key behaviour takes some getting used to, and your hand tendons will hate it. Where exactly am I swinging? Am I supposed to click on the zombie, or in it's general direction? I'm still not sure if combat effectivness is random or there is any techique involved based on where to click. Sometimes I think I'm clicking in the right place for a clean kill and the sprite swings 90o away from the target. I still don't get it. I highly recommend spending some time in sandbox mode to get the hang of things. Also, the game needs a map of key locations. After a few days you need to venture out into the great unknown. Without prior knowledge of the map you're going to have a bad time! Find a copy of PZ map online and print it out. After all, if this was a real zombie apocalyse I assume you would know about the town where you lived well enough to know where all the stores and other key building were.

Simple and entertaining, just what I was looking for to kill some time.
