Follow-up: Launching the VS debugger on the crash indeed reveals:

Which would mean XNA installation is a requirement. Which *probably* means that the downloadable archive *without* a Desura client is not enough to run the game.
Does the Desura client take care of checking XNA dependencies, or is the current archive faulty in that regard?

Are there any dependencies on having XNA installed? Or not having (multiple) Visual Studio installations on the system?
Windows Media Player is installed, but only the version that came with the OS.
Which dlls are missing? I could try and see if I find them on my system.
