I find it odd that on a modders home someone hasn’t realized and said something about what SL is. SL is no more a game than Unity, Unreal, or Blender are. But, it has games inside it.
##############################################

SL is primarily a framework intended for fast game prototyping. It provides a collaborative environment for developers. Users have adapted it for; role play, combat (if you have a high tolerance to lag), marketing research & testing, fashion design, art, music (Duran Duran is there for one), fund raising (Wig for Kids US$16k+ in 2013 – Rely for Life over $1+ million since 2005 – etc.), and of course porn.

Many have found SL a simplified pathway for learning 3D modeling and game design. Compared to Blender SL is simple with a lower learning curve. It has the added benefit of placing the learning process in a multi-user environment making learning and teaching much easier and fun. Colleges were big on SL until the previous management drove them out via pricing. The current management is trying to get them back.

A few SL users in 2007 were earning 7 figure incomes. A few are still earning 6 figure incomes. A significant number of people make their living in the 5 figure range. Thousands supplement their income. Tens of thousands make pocket change from SL.

If you are an imaginative self motivator, SL is amazing. If you are entitlement oriented and/or just want to be entertained, it’s boring and you’ll find nothing to do.
