Report RSS Z is for Zombie

Posted by on

They're here to stay.

Yeah sure, they can fade into the background, but you know they're there. The occasional groan gives them away. But for the moment they are here, gnawing in your face everywhere you turn. Grab the nearest shovel and start bashing - it's a never-ending horde!

Zombie Flesheaters,Thriller, The Night of the Living Dead, House of the Dead, The Walking Dead, Shaun of the Dead, The Evil Dead, 28 Days Later, Resident Evil, Dead Island, Dead Rising,Left 4 Dead, DayZ, Rob Zombie, Plants vs Zombies, Atom Zombie Smasher, Space Pirates and Zombies......so many dead zombies. And yet only a mere morsel of how Zombies have already infiltrated our culture - I'm more than sure everyone will recognise at least a few from the list.

Why are we so fascinated by our animated dead selves? I remember around ten years ago seeing a small report on the BBC website about what was thought to be a zombie outbreak in a jungle in Africa. For some reason, this made me very excited until further research proved it to be April Fool's Day. Aaaarrgghh...what a disappointment. Should it have been any other day of the year that the BBC reported a zombie finding, then I may not have be alive today to write this.

Still, I was disappointed. So, the question remains - why do we fantasise over our dead gran coming back to eat our face off (probably not the best of examples, I feel, but let's not rule it out)? That is really another discussion entirely, although development team The Indie Stone has given us the opportunity to practice our survival skills in the meantime, and that is the reason for this blog.

Project Zomboid is a zombie apocalypse simulator. Nuff said, really. Sadly, it's showing me how unprepared I really am. It's a tough world out there, the undead are numerous and supplies are few and far between. The latest update to the alpha version of the game goes to show that a couple of years of work has realised an accurate picture of the dangers of zombie survival. I can't quite get it out of my head, as this rogue-like makes the process very real, with physical and psychological management a must. I've died many times - I think 5 days was my best - but I want to subject myself to more.

It's really quite gripping. I'd like to keep some kind of journal about my experience. I was even happy to find that I could write a journal in-game, but this turned a little sour as I was suddenly weighed down by 400 pages of my lonely ranting! It did occur to me though, that a neat touch would be the ability to write your own journal in game. Maybe even in the future, when online multi-player is available (I trust in you guys!), you'll be able to read other dead player's characters journals. Madness.

Listen out for more groans soon.
