Particulars

Game review

Aaahh, how good to get down to the nitty gritty at a molecular level. Particulars, thus far, has provided me with a place to go to meditate and relax while playing with the negative and positive forces of nature.

Everything about this game presents itself as a stylistic journey with an abstract storyline. Still in alpha, it develops as we go. Supporting pad controls, the graphics and audio in this game make for a heady, but minimal atmosphere. The particle trails themselves are enough to log in for a play. Some of the levels have beautiful lighting with different types of particles casting a different coloured glow.

The gameplay starts relatively slowly, but soon ramps up in the still developing second chapter. I look forward to see how far this idea can be pushed, presenting the end user with a complex challenge.

Nice works peeps.

Project Zomboid

Early access game review may contain spoilers

Well, well...after a few plays of the latest build of Project Zomboid, (and a few years of patiently waiting), I can safely say that the recent update (read-'overhaul') has delivered what this project initially promised - an umcompromising rogue-like sandbox crafting survival game set after a zombie apocalypse. Remember, this game was visioned when zombies hadn't swamped the mainstream market so much, but it doesn't make a difference - the Indie Stone team seems to have grabbed the reins again and launched ahead full force.

I bought into this game from the get go, loving the initial demo and the potential of the what could be. The recent update has given players an even better taste of life with the undead. I have played quite a few times, and am still to find the hammer, axe AND wood in one game without being chomped by the zomboids. There is a slower feeling of dread to this version, with the ability to explore for a while without even seeing a Z, although while looting other houses, the occasional zombies within can become a intense nightmare.

The graphics have improved greatly since the initial demo, with the lighting and line of sight systems highly effective. The zombie models are more varied, as are the interior of the buildings. There are however still a number of graphical glitches with character models popping through walls and various objects appearing through different floors.

The sound effects are excellent - you can be creeping around an unknown building, and hear Zeds beating their heads against the doors. Tension mounts as glass breaks somewhere and an alarm goes off. Overhead, helicopters make their presence known. Different moans and groans accompany differents Zeds and even yourself as you succumb to zombification.

My last play had me quietly escaping a few zombies that had found me in a house. I opened a curtain only to see a massive crowd of zombies beating at the window. I opened the front door only to be met by the biggest horde yet......
