Specifically when it comes to mods I don't have much of a history to speak of. I've never sat down and made one, though I'm quite familiar with several engines and programming languages. I also run Linux which limits some of my options in terms of gaming. I know how to shell out criticism if thats what you are looking for though. I intend on joining at least one game or engine project soon once I get some other things out of the way.

I wish I could playtest this game without subjecting myself to the soundtrack. I don't see any key mapping to turn it off, only to skip to the next track.

It's a great start but I hope you are still open to suggestions.

I'd like to suggest a model based off of this one. Flip the weapon types of Light and Medium. So the top will read: Piercing, Medium, Light, Explosives. Defaulting every field to 1 to begin with and then putting 2's diagonally from the top left to bottom right (including buildings to get 2 for explosives). Maybe even after that put a 0.5 on the bottom left and/or top right.

Then for the bottom two, I think light is made way too ineffective against buildings. I can't say I've tried it out yet to get a feel, but I would imagine .25 being the lowest I'd want to go to keep that weapon type even a viable option.

Thanks for putting your time to working on something like this.

Good article. Freedom of association is one of those libertarian philosophies that seems to surface in open source game development, depending on your interpretation. A separation of theme from content, commonly practiced in web development, surfaces in games with editing features that can change the overall look and feel, while leaving gameplay intact. I would say Braid is an exception where the two cannot be easily separated.

The music is good, though I wonder if you've tried turning the techno grind down by about 9 decibels when the high pitched notes come in. Just the first half-second reminded me of the beginning of Kashmir by Led Zeppelin, too, which is not a complaint. I think its great that a mod is getting this caliber of musical treatment to back up its visual work.

I hold the same philosophy with photography. I rely on prime lenses (cannot zoom) and force myself to compose a picture within their constraints. In the end I'm happier with my photos because I don't worry about if I framed it too big or too small by a focal length of a millimeter. I didn't have an option in the matter and the photograph becomes perfect the way it is.

Creating 'the ultimate game' is a hole that I believe many young developers seem to stumble into, especially when they are first introduced to a new language, new tools, or a new engine. Everything seems possible to do, and suddenly everything has to be done. But when the sky is the limit, you are only setting yourself up for a bigger fall. Creativity thrives on restraints and if you can't create something under certain limitations, you'll fair no better when those limitations are removed.

They are good, but if I may offer a few critiques. One I agree that they are kind of bare, and two, it doesn't make much sense for me that the gas grenade has the international symbol for radiation hazard on it. It looks like it just fell out of Duke Nukem 3D with all the cheesiness that that entails. The toxic (skull and bones) or biohazard symbols seem like they would be much more appropriate.

It appears to me to be too top heavy with the the size of the grip being disproportional to the rest of the gun. The curve at the front of the trigger guard also doesn't look good and reduces the margin of error when someone is trying to quick draw and find the trigger with their finger, which functionally isn't good either. Overall it seems to be going for too sleek of a look than is reasonable for a firearm.

I second that comment.

Have you considered putting all the code under some kind of open source license? Creative Commons might be good for licenses on original content such as models and textures.

Some constructive criticism... that is the worst voice acting I've ever heard. It sounds like a 15 year old trying to do a Sean Connery impression and failing miserably. Also your logo is a little unimaginative. "Oooh let's take HAL from 2001: Space Odyssey and turn it blue - Dude! That is so clever."
