600 gold is fine. You can manage with only one crew member (+captain). 200 gold is more than enough for supplies. If you have only 2 members you dont have to buy food because food you get from starting the game should be enough for while. Axe cost somewhere around 90 gold if i remember correctly and every other weapon cost less so with 200 gold for supplies is more than enough. Just set course to some island and hope there is one or two enemies with treasure. Your crew levels up while sailing.
