heheheh... love it...
come on, it wasn't thaaaat bad... WB has done worse things, such as Tauriel, and the Golden Thror Statue scene, etc. ... (and those elves at Helm's Deep) but Azog was pretty cool...
---In the book, Gandalf helped Thorin in order to avoid Smaug allying with Sauron. Smaug could't had known that Sauron was rising again BECAUSE HE HAD BEEN ASLEEP (or maybe just awoken BUT inside the lonely mountain) FOR YEARS, but in the moovie (based on what the dragon says) it seems that Smaug already knows that Sauron is rising again AND instead of going to Dol Guldur and allying with sauron (if he did that, he could have killed as many Dwarves and lake cities as he wanted) he goes to burn a poor and little city by the lake in the middle of nowhere (a stupid thing, makes no sense because Smaug is supposed to be very intelligent) :
“To resist any force that Sauron might send to regain the northern passes in the mountains and the old lands of Angmar there were only the Dwarves of the Iron Hills, and behind them lay a desolation and a Dragon. The Dragon Sauron might use with terrible effect. Often I said to myself: "I must find some means of dealing with Smaug. But a direct stroke against Dol Guldur is needed still more. We must disturb Sauron's plans.” ”
Gandalf to Thorin: “ 'Far away here, I wonder if you fully realize the strength of a great Dragon. But that is not all: there is a Shadow growing fast in the world far more terrible. They will help one another.' And they certainly would have done so, if I had not attacked Dol Guldur at the same time. 'Open war would be quite useless; and anyway it is impossible for you to arrange it. You will have to try something simpler and yet bolder, indeed something desperate.' ”
Other mistakes:
---Gandalf discovered that the necromancer was sauron BEFORE the unexpected journey and not DURING it:
“Afterwards Thráin and Thorin Oakenshield dwelt in the Ered Luin, but in the year 2841, Thráin set out from there to return to the Lonely Mountain. While wandering in the lands east of Anduin he was captured and imprisoned in Dol Guldur, where the ring was taken from him. In 2850 Gandalf entered Dol Guldur and discovered that its master was indeed Sauron; and there he came upon Thráin before he died.” [Thráin gave Gnadalf the Key and the Map before dying] SO, Gandalf was given the key and the map and AFTERWARDS he discovered that the necromancer was sauron and months, or years AFTER THAT he met Thorin and the journey started.
I totally agree with you, they could have done a better job... if they had made the movie more like the book, it would have been better, they skipped most of the eagles part (in the book, that part was quite boring but it needed to be there, because the eagles would re-appear in the final battle), beorn's part is longer and better in the book (and beorn, in the book, can "mutate" whenever he wants and he doesn't hate Dwarves, he really likes Thorin)
Mirkwood part is, in the book, the longest part AND it has much more content than in the movie. The elves never get to know how the dwarves escape. All the Bard thing only helps to ruin the character, because, in the book, Bard is not a smuggler and the Dwarves do not know anything about him until they are within Erebor. Besides, Esgaroth is not described by Tolkien as an ugly city.
