They are an ENGLESH invention from the 17th century (the funny thing is that englesh people never used thed exept for the army), before that, scotts used some type of tartan towels arround their legs. The problem is that a lot of people also call them "kilts" (i'm not saying they are wrong) and then you see a modern kilt in films such bravehard (terrible historical accurad film, but nice movie ;) ). But as I see the image, they look more or less as they should, like a towel arround legs.
