AO is pretty awesome. Also in this case, if you want to save a texture map and your model is detailed enough, you could be able to have an AO map using vertex colours (so long as the engine you're working with supports them)

Sadly the engine doesn't (as far as I know) and I have to add the rendered ambient occlusion map in photoshop to the texture. It's not quite as great, but still looks way better than with no AO map at all.
