I've mulled over game ideas for years but have no idea where to begin. Should I mod? Or should I make a new game from scratch?
As mod community members and fans, we know Doom, Half-Life, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. are widely modded games.
But then there are recent indie games like Risk of Rain, Mercenary Kings, and the famed Hotline Miami. But I know next to nothing about mod development, much less game development.
I've heard of GameMaker, which is what Hopoo used to create RoR. And also CraftStudio, which is used to make Minecraft-style "voxel" minigames.
But I'd like to develop something with a bit of depth, exploration, and RPG elements, along an economy and an XP system, like the Fallout games. But there are a variety of other influences to consider too, like System Shock 2, Borderlands, XCOM, Raptor: Call of the Shadows, Deus Ex...
I dunno. Should I continue to self-indulge in the same games over and over again in my free time while my ideas sit idle and gather dust? Or should I incorporate them into a tangible, interactive project?
Not sure who to turn to for advice. Feel like I'm alone here...
