Oh, misty eye of the mountain below
Keep careful watch of my brothers' souls
And should the sky be filled with fire and smoke
Keep watching over Durin's sons
How?
Play a modern song on the guitar (I only play Foo Fighters, Greenday, Coldplay, and Imagine Dragons) or an instrument. They'll end up liking it, and then play them one of your best songs. I play Snow, Wanted Dead or Alive, Black Dog, or Purple Haze. Play a song that is pretty badass like that, and they may (75% chance) or may not (25% chance) like it. And then give them slow ballads by random bands (Aerosmith - I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing, Guns N' Roses - Patience, Greenday - Wake Me Up When September Ends, Scorpions - Wind of Change, etc.), they'll like it. After a week or two, play electric to them and show them an awesome riff/metal (or rock) chord progression from songs such as: Master of Puppets, Master Exploder, Smells Like Teen Spirit, etc. and they will almost always like it. When they do, give them songs to listen to such as: The Unforgiven III - Metallica, Walk This Way - Aerosmith, Love Song - Tesla, Carry On My Wayward Son - Kansas, etc.
And if they truly do like it (I've had a 90% conversion rate right now. Of the 70 people I did, only 8 people hated the older music I showed them), then they will be listening to that music much more often.
The reason this works better than showing them directly is because if you can play it, they'd be amazed. They'd want to see how the original does it and probably compare you. When they compare, they'll realize you're not as awesome as them and therefore, will try to expand their knowledge on that music. I was actually converted by my cousin (7 years old now) 4 years ago when he put Bon Jovi on the radio...
I convert people well. It's easy.

Your method is good.
