You probably have tried this, but have you tried clicking back onto the pokeball after capturing a pokemon? Nice comment by the way, and I agree, this game is what i've dreamed of as well.

You can actually move into a freeroam mode by pressing q, and you can rotate the camera with right-click+drag in that mode, however, when you're locked onto an opponent, I don't think it's possible, but i'm not sure about that.
This game is awesome, I love every single aspect about the game, I'm amazed at all the work that has been put into this game and I hope to see more of the amazing models and game aspects.
Oh wow, that actually worked, thanks! I do feel like an idiot for not looking for an answer to that though...
I think for an increased freeworld aspect, you should be able to control your pokemon freely without sending them into a battle and pressing 'q', and also when the pokemon can freeroam, the camera can be rotated left and right as well. (On my pokemon generations I can't rotate my screen left/right after pressing q as a pokemon).
