here's what I found.

With cpupatch=0 as you suggested, I have not experienced a crash, which is great! This seems to have fixed the problem.

I am still playing without sound, but it seems that hte cpupatch=0 thing is the key (as I previously experienced crashes even with the sound turned off in game).

So... for all experiencing some in-game crashing try turning off the sound (in game) and try Orzie's 'cpupatch=0' fix, articulated above.

I'll proceed with the 'CPUPATCH=0' fix and do a little more testing.

Regarding the crashes, any additional info you could give would be welcomed. I installed the game per your directions and AM using the HD mod with the added 'tweak'. It loads up and plays fine, there are no performance issues, just a random crash here and there.

Is there a preferred way I should have my HD mod set up?
Should I run the HD mod or H3SW.exe under any certain compatibility modes, like windows XP perhaps?

I got the mod last night, wanted to report a few things to notify you and hopefully help others.

First and foremost thank you and your team so much for this! I have played the mod just a bit; but so far it's brilliant. A blend of HOMM2 & 3, that still manages to capture the feel of both games (that happen to be very different from one another).

My first attempt, I used my old laptop computer. It's Windows XP or Vista. I don't think this mod will work very successfully on these operating systems. Not sure how to address the issues but after trying to patch the game clean and also in conjunction with the HD mod I still wasn't able to get it to work. I had many errors and it just wouldn't work. I ended up concluding that it's an incompatible Operating system and/or it's a very old system.

My second attempt featured another laptop with Windows 7 on it. I got the game to run successfully with the Game (a clean install from the disc of Heroes 3 complete), patching it with the HD mod, adding the 'tweak' as described on the FB site and patching the SW mod to the HD modded version. I used H3SW.exe and it loaded up and was great, worked great, brought me right back!

However, at a few junctures while playing there were crashes and freeze ups. For instance, in battle the music started skipping and I had to basically restart my CPU. I was facing x2 8 stacks of Wasps. I remember the old school homm2 having issue with crashes due to sound, so I turned sound off altogether. Even with this, I still experienced some freezes and crashes. Not quite sure what's causing this. It doesn't break the game per say, as you can just re-load your save, but it seems like a crash is inevitable every time I play. I am not 100% certain what's causing this. Sometimes it happens when exiting a castle, or mid-battle, or engaging with a dwelling inside the castle. I'm sure there are still some bugs to work out, so I wanted to let you know what I experienced on my end.

All-in-all, excellent mod. I am very impressed and very grateful. Thank you for the dedication and I look forward to this mod being continually upgraded and improved.

Wanted to write and express my appreciation and adulation for this project. I grew up playing the 'Heroes' series, and the graphics/gameplay of Heroes 2 was always my favorite. However, the added features of Heroes 3 was always more desirable. To finally have this (and soon) is amazing to me. I wanted to say thank you and keep up the great work to everyone involved! I have been following this project for awhile and I promised to show my 8 year old son the wonder and glory of such a great game when this mod drops!
