South Park: The Stick of Truth

Game review

This has been my game of the year so far (as of the day this was written.) It'll probably be surpassed by something else, but so far, it's up there with the great games.

Why? It's not just because I'm a fan of the show. No, not at all. In fact, I only watched a few episodes here and there of South Park before playing this game. This game is great.

Despite all the craziness you expect from South Park, such as the anal probe and abortion scenes, the game is a very fun turn-based RPG.

That's not the highlight, though. I do wish the combat was a bit more in-depth. I can't name anything specific, but I wish there was a bit more depth to all the abilities and weapons available. South Park's true highlight is the humor.

This is definitely the funniest game, along with the best licensed game I have ever played. And the humor doesn't have to glare at you, either. It's subtle things, like the random Christmas song that plays during the abortion minigame, or the Hasslehoff nosejob. Then there's Cartman's overall humor.

My personal favorite was the Canada section of the overworld. I loved the guard at the border, before and after getting the passport. It was hilarious. Even more hilarious was the various jokes within the Canadian world, along with the obvious fact that it was made to look like a top-down RPG from the 90s.

Overall, I really want to see some nice mods for this game. The turn-based combat system could allow for some awesome mods.

A few things I was disappointed with, though. I was sad when I found that I couldn't actually play as a female character. I guess it sort of makes sense, but perhaps it could've been done, with a few changes in dialogue. I wanted to see perhaps different ranks depending on if you chose Kyle or Cartman at a certain point in the game. (Like Elf Cleric for Kyle, with Knight for Cartman, for example.)

If you haven't played it yet, give it a shot. Whether you're a fan or not, you'll be rolling.
