STALKER Complete 2009

Mod review

I don't get the hate this mod gets from what seems to be a reduced, but (almost unpleasantly) vocal minority. Having played Shadow of Chernobyl in its original incarnation, I can say that this game (much like other broken "classics-that-were-not-to-be", i.e. Vampire: Bloodlines) really deserved all of the community support it could get, as the concept was brilliant but the execution is utterly, horribly broken. SoC Complete alleviates lots of annoyances of the original game, such as the headache-inducing head bob in normal (and I say 'normal' because, let's be honest: if you walk rather than run -not sprint- in SoC, you're probably into being poked with red-hot coals in the eyes too) movement, along with expanding the gameplay with lots of mechanics that enrich, rather than dumb down, the experience. Where it gets ridiculous is in that for all of the amazing, exhaustive and extensive graphical updates (highly professional to boot), the experience is now highly stable (the unmodded game makes my CPU cooler whirr like crazy, while Complete actually lets me play without cranking the volume up to eleven) and bug and crash-free.

Reasons that I know of to hate this mod are:

1. You somehow believe the existence of this mod retroactively prevents the original release from existing. It doesn't. Just install the original game and play, I guess.
2. You believe this mod will prevent newcomers from experiencing the original (broken, bug-ridden) thing. It won't. From what I know, most people don't bother modding. They'll give up on the game though.
3. That the name 'Complete' is kinda pretentious for a mod. I guess it is, but heck - this thing deserves a pat in the back for the sheer effort alone.

Two final notes: if you come to this mod because you hate the original game's gunfire mechanics, I highly recommend the weapons patch by Artistpavel, which is designed for compatibility with Complete. Also, RUN THE INSTALLER AS ADMINISTRATOR, FOR CHRISSAKES!
