Version 0.18 will probably be ready near the end of December.

Is that on Linux? If so I'll take a closer look at the Linux packaging.
Yep. If you exit to the title screen and come back you'll be at the map entry point though.
First make sure you meet the Requirements to use the bow. Mouse-over the bow and if the requirements are Red, you can't use it yet.
Once you can, equip the bow in your left hand ("off-hand slot").
To shoot the bow use a ranged Power. E.g. drag the "Shoot" power to your action bar.
This is a short demo game made for the alpha engine. There are probably two more Alpha releases. Once all the features are ready we'll flesh out a full game.
As JPS800 said, there is a River Encampment map that is separate.
We'll be fixing this in the full version of the game, make sure there's no confusion about quest objectives.
Drop me a PM or open an issue on our github page with details, and we'll figure out what's going on.
Thanks! Hopefully one day we'll have a great community around the engine. Imagine having a huge pool of tile sets, enemies and equipment to create games. Also imagine having a website to upload and rate Flare mods, adventures, and total conversions.
Flare lead dev here.
We're working on an update that will fix the issues with using old save games and settings in the new version.
If you want to play now, here are two things to try:
1. When you run the game, go to Configuration -> Mods and enable the mod named "alpha_demo"
2. Find your save files (in your Desura install folder, under Common/Flare/saves) and edit them. If you see a line that says "spawn=spawn.txt,0,0" just delete that line and save.
If these steps don't work for you, there may be something else we need to patch! Please email me your save game and I'll use it as a test case. clintbellanger at Google's popular email service.
Go into the Configuration screen, Mods tab and make sure the "fantasycore" mod is enabled and on top, then "alpha_demo" mod is enabled just under that one.
Go into the Configuration screen, Mods tab and enable the "Alpha Demo" mod.
Email me your save file and I'll see if I can update it. We're still doing major system changes during Alpha so some things don't carry over.
The Flare forums are a good place for us to help people building the project, especially because someone else might be having the same trouble and the answer will help them too. Hit me up there.
Further down in Ydrakka pass there's a small cave entrance. Warning, it's a real tough area!
The ground shakes when you Critical Strike.
Glad you're enjoying it!
We'll look into difficulties. The game is very easy to mod, so we might use mods to create stuff like hard modes.
The skill tree branches are going to be much more expanded. We completely rewrote them for v0.17 which is coming out soon.
When creating a character there is a "Permadeath?" checkbox. Good luck!
After you spend a few attribute points the game assigns the character a basic class description. E.g. if you're a heavy magic, heavy armor type character it will show up on the load screen as Cleric.
Right now it doesn't really have a gameplay purpose, it just reminds the player which character is which. At the engine level we might add it to NPC dialog though, so they could refer to the character as "Cleric Ozgurilgin" for example.
The next version (0.17) will be out this weekend.
Fun! It is tweaked slightly too hard right now cause it's mostly us devs playing. Maybe we'll keep it though?
There will be story -- really, more backstory than in-game exposition. The campaign will be a small local story instead of a "save the world" quest. But like most Action RPGs, the player can ignore the plot details and treat it like a dungeon crawl.
By the way, to avoid having to uninstall/reinstall (if anyone else runs into this issue)
In the Desura install folder, edit the Common/Flare/config/settings.txt to change resolution manually.
The game attempts to only show resolutions supported by the video card. PM me your video card/monitor setup and we'll look into it.
Flare creator here. I'm excited you guys are discovering our little project. We're still in Alpha and it shows (plenty rough around the edges). Thanks for your patience! And we're completely free/open-source, so check us out if you're interested in helping.
We're fortunate to have fans of the game that support those builds on many platforms.
I used to have an NPC that broke the 4th wall to talk about gameplay, but it wasn't very fun. Before we reach Beta we'll be looking for better ways to teach the player the basics.
