Amnesia: Horror Rebuild

Mod review

At first I've to say that I play computer games since 28 years and always liked "just" two genres - FPS and Survival Horror. I also loved retail games and physical discs, but in 2010 I finally created a steam account - only to be able to get my hands on Amnesia when it came out. It's, together with Monolith's F.E.A.R., my all-time favorite game and I played through the main story at least 8 times already.

Now to modding. I did never bothered much with mods, except maybe Brutal DOOM, but this mod somehow attracted me when I saw some pictures, but it was 100% clear to me that no mod in the world could make Amnesia even better than it already was. To make it short, I was wrong. The mod I speak about here is neither a custom story, nor a total conversion, but rather something that intensifies the terrific atmosphere and the shocking moments throughout the entire game, sometimes more, sometimes less subtle, but always PRESENT.

The means the author uses for to achieve all that are simple, but effective. The soundtrack had been altered in an even darker way, the same goes for the screams and other sfx. Then, Daniel's health has become a more important factor than in the original game, esp. the hallucinating sequences are perfectly changed to give the game a slightly more horrific feel Not less important, the level of randomness is even higher - and with it the tension the player has to stand. And, last but not least, a lot of textures have been changed / reskinned with well-fitting alternatives. All these things do not let you doubt a single moment what you're actually playing there, but it will grant you the chance to follow Daniel's way in an environment just different enough to make it become a new experience, a new old Amnesia, and that's what did first surprise and later thrill me, so many thanks to the author for letting me enjoy my favorite game during my ninth playthrough without getting bored just one single second. Awesome work mate, keep it up! CS

EDIT:

I finally found the time to do a full playthrough with v2.0 of the mod, and I've to say I'm truly impressed, mostly because of two things: First, v2.0 actually makes the best game ever created not only different, but also MUCH BETTER in points of atmosphere and tension, something I wouldn't have thought to be possible at all. Second, v2.0 is not some improved version of v1.0, it feels like an entire different mod, less experimental, but more consistent, actually focussing in improving the strenghts of the game instead of focussing in changing it generally. These improvements can be seen / heard / felt in almost any aspect of the game: The music and sound effects are better fitting than the one of v1.0 and in my opinion made as professional as the original ones. Esp. the SFX raise the tension of the game to a new dimension; and btw, the author even provides an alternate version of most of them to try out. Then there are the graphics. Changes are more subtle, but also more effective than in v1.0 in regards of the textures, while the monsters are similar to v1.0, but look better, I would call it "optimized". Another point are the few changes in scripting and balancing, the v2.0 mod makes deeper changes in that point as v1.0, and all of these are much appreciated by me; the game feels more "fair" resp. better balanced between being challenging and frustrating.

To summarize my thoughts, I strongly suggest to anyone, even those who did not like v1.0, to give v2.0 a try, as it provides an entirely different experience and actually makes the game BETTER in many aspects. From all Amnesia mods out there this one clearly is my favorite, and no, I'm not getting paid by the author for my review. ;)

Cheers,

CS

EDIT:

I want to add a short review of the new "Full Conversion" horror rebuild mod. It has become something really special, as it manages to still feel like Amnesia in terms of mechnics and controls, but to create an entirely different, much more intense and scary experience. There's new maps, well-made transitions and dream sequences, new, better-looking monsters, a gorgeous soundtrack with SFX that will make your blood freeze, and much more. The game has become darker, more intente and focussed on resource management and pure horror, without relying on poor jumpscares. It's an extremely immersive, very challenging experience which I strongly recommend to each fan of the original game and horro games in general, you'll not be disappointed, I promise.
