Try to lower your graphic settings, especially your 'texture detail' settings. It may help.

Presenting us with updates and giving the testers the chance to search for errors and bugs is how modding works. Better be grateful that we get a better version now instead of having to wait for the mod team to completely finish the mod (which doesn't happen for many mods at all).

The big map is there to fit all the new factions in a historical setting; a slammer map qouldn't do.
The 'weird' places like the battlefield mostly are there to make editing scenes easier for the modders, I believe. The weird items are for better looks; like, the 'hand gloves' make the right index finger fit the triggers of the guns you use, instead of the normal hands of native, who are both just a fist and may look weird with the guns. Hats with faces/hair give some extra variety...

The villages and towns have different symbols on the map representing them. Take a closer look at these.

The mod uses the reloading system from the old 1866 mod, which is best suited for the weapons in the 1860s, and which is, in my humble opinion, superior to the animation of WF&S.

Both 'Runtime Errors' and 'Unable to restore vertex buffer errors' are usually caused by either the computer or the game being nagle to handle the graphics of the mod. Try to lower your settings (especially 'texture detail' settings), and things should go better.
