The best way to learn exactly that, Crux_Borealis, is to use the trial & error method by simply using your ears. Try things out and see if it works for you, and try to compare your work/mixes with some music you like.
You will be best of with some mastering-software though. Try the T-RackS from IK Multimedia.. - a great all-in-one mastering solution.
The only way to learn how to mix and master is by trying it out for yourself :) . But, there is of course a lot of great advice on the internet. One very great site is: www.tweakheadz.com (enjoy)
