I approve of the turret idea, seems like a great way to increase the difficulty just try to balance them out or people will moan.

I would like to suggest a suggestion, I feel that you should be able to capture bases and claim it for the faction you are currentely aligned with, with every base you capture the better the items merchants have. This make players want to take over the bases instead of just steering away from them so they don't risk dying. Also I think the bases should be way more heavily guarded because I think they are too easy to raid.
