Note the lend-lease 1915CSRG "Chauchat" machine gun, which is originally a French gun. The US received a number of these, but didnt find it reliable because the open magazines filled with mud in the trenches which caused jamming. This eventually led to the development of the BAR 1918. Although, later verisons of the Chauchat proved to be very reliable, because of the improved magazine and firing system.
The later version got he closed magazine, alslo the main reason of why the Chauchat add so much bad experiment under the American end whas mostly because of the inadapted 30.06 catridge adapted for them.
