What are this things ?
Well I think these generators are responsible for emissions in CNPP so the C-Consciousness build them to unleash emission against intruders such as Clear Sky or Strelok or Military. I don´t know if my information is 100% correct but when you think about it there are only few reasons why they build these generators maybe they use it to connect reality with noosphere or they are use them to prevent the rift in noosphere from expanding.
those giant boobies are the generators, they are in the alpha/beta builds of the original game
They are not just in beta/alpha you can see them in CNPP in Shadow of Chernobyl and in Clear Sky Images3.wikia.nocookie.net

In NS DMX you will get a task to collect Brains from some unique Controllers right under the feet's of this generators.
But you must finish the main quest first with destroying the C-Consciousness ( sorry ) and disconnect them from the generators.
Also in NS DMX there are plenty of Controllers in this level. And it will explained that all of them comes from the CNPP 2.
The CNPP 1 is "only" the front entry to the plant.
And the info is right, they are responsible for emissions. But will work without the C-Consciousness too. They are the door to the whole Zone or World for the C-Consciousness.
