You're thinking about them too much like pets. They'd be more like intelligent alien lifeforms, assuming they actually existed as the show portrayed them. They're pretty damn sentient and intelligent in the show, some of them smarter than people I know. :I

But if real, smart or not... they'd be treated as pets and without restriction. This is every cloppers dream and a small pony couldn't fight back very well.

I'd love if they were real, but many changes to the justice system would have to be made to allow for that, like laws and morals, so them being smart wouldn't mean much if their rights weren't upheld.

I'm pretty sure many are just joking, but yeah there will be the crazies who will be all over their "waifu". Those are the people, unfortunately, that will have their spaghetti-covered hands all over them.

Smart or not, it's the animal fact... for example, if we somehow trained a horse in real life to be smart, talk and interact normally, that doesn't suddenly give you a legal right to have sex with it.

Though yea, if they were claimed sentient, then some laws will apply though enforcing them wouldn't be easy unless like, every "Pony/MLP" pony had to be registered and their prospects tracked so if one went missing to unknown reasons, their carer would be the suspect.
