I'm still gonna miss expanded universe and the fact that order 66 was really out of their loyalty to the Republic, instead of a chip. It always seemed more epic to me, out of loyalty instead.
Think, imagine if Rex and these few clones instead saw where things were going, and that what they'd be fighting for "wouldn't" be the Republic anymore. And that was their reason to leave instead of getting a chip out of their heads.
Clones' fierce and mostly unswerving loyalty to the Republic was enough to decimate the Jedi Order. Bio-chips were simply a firm assurance that clones would unquestionably perform certain actions.
Some people incorporate EU into SW canon, it makes the SW franchise more cohesive despite some contradictions. Darth Bane is canon, which means Bastila and Revan are also official characters, because Bane learned about the Rule of Two from Revan's holocron. So, if we delve into details, we may be able to tie up some loose ends.
Hrm, this might actually get me into watching Rebels.
Though I would be interested to know what happened to the majority of Clones. There have always been only hints what happened to most of them after the Clone Wars. I mean, of course they continued serving the Empire, but eventually they would be too old for combat duty.
Did they serve as instructors for the Stormtroopers? Senior officers and advisors? Did they actually get some kind of retirement option? Or were they just quietly executed after becoming too old? They can't all have died in combat, especially since there was no all-out war anymore.
But I have to say I didn't like the whole chip implant story in TCW as well, amongst other things.
